COMMERCIAL >Washington Hospital Center North Addition

The Washington Hospital Center modernization followed the process of Certificate of Need and evaluation of the market conditions for the future demands of the community. The resulting study and survey indicated the need for 180 new patient beds, a new materials management department, central sterile supply department, new surgical suites, new patient reception lobby and new parking facility.

All this evolved over a number of years while functioning as the lead architect for David Porter Associates, architect of record. We coordinated the programmatic requirements and interviewed the doctors and nurses to have their direct input into the design.

The new operating rooms provided state of the art suites over 575 sf to accommodate the additional equipment and personnel needed for complex operations for heart surgery and eye surgery. Relationship proximities were studied and the separation of sterile and non-sterile circulation through the departments was carefully considered. The interaction between the Central Sterile Supply Department and the other levels of the hospital was an important function vital to the efficient operation of the facility.

The private patient bedrooms provided the upgraded level of care needed after many years of service to the city. The rooms were designed to allow the nursing staff to complete their rounds by walking past the rooms and seeing the patients head without needing to enter the room. As a result, the staff can more easily and effectively oversee the care of the patients and provide better service. This project was effective for positioning the hospital in a competitive market for the coming decades.
